Atlantis magic truffles are illegal to buy, sell, or possess in the UK. While they are legal in some other countries, most notably the Netherlands, UK law specifically bans any fungus containing the psychoactive substances psilocybin and psilocin, including the sclerotia, or “truffles”.
Legality in the UK
- Class A controlled substance: Psilocybin and psilocin are Class A drugs under the UK’s Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.
- Truffle-specific ban: The Drugs Act 2005 closed a previous legal loophole regarding fresh mushrooms and clarified that any part of a fungus containing psilocybin—including magic truffles—is a Class A substance.
- Penalties: Possession carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison and/or an unlimited fine. Supplying them carries an even harsher penalty.
- Illegal to import: It is also a criminal offense to import magic truffles into the UK, even if purchased legally elsewhere.
Risks of purchasing from unregulated sources
- Legal risk: Buying magic truffles from an online or black-market source is illegal and can lead to severe legal consequences.
- Health risk: Products from unregulated sellers have no quality control and may be contaminated or mislabelled. This could lead to a dangerous or unpredictable experience.
- Bad trips: Atlantis truffles are known for their visual intensity and can cause anxiety, panic, and paranoia, especially at high doses.
Legal status in Europe
While illegal in the UK and many other EU nations, magic truffles are legal to buy and possess in the Netherlands. This is due to a 2008 law that banned magic mushrooms but did not specifically include magic truffles. This legal distinction is what makes the Netherlands a hub for “psilocybin tourism”.
