Diamond Shruumz-brand chocolate bars and other mushroom edibles have been recalled after dozens of people fell ill after consuming the products.
“One Up” mushroom chocolate bars are illegal and extremely dangerous products in the UK. They are unregulated, black-market edibles that contain psilocybin, a Class A controlled substance.
Legality in the UK
- Class A substance: Psilocybin and psilocin, the active psychoactive compounds in magic mushrooms, are Class A controlled substances under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.
- No loophole for edibles: The Drugs Act 2005 closed a legal loophole by clarifying that any part of a fungus containing psilocybin is a Class A substance, whether fresh, dried, or infused into an edible like a chocolate bar.
- Severe penalties: Buying, possessing, or supplying illegal edibles carries severe penalties, including fines and imprisonment.
Extreme health risks
Unregulated “mushroom bars” pose significant health risks for consumers.
- Inconsistent dosage: A study cited by The Guardian found that products sold as mushroom chocolates have inconsistent dosages, with some containing no psilocybin at all, while others contain dangerous synthetic chemicals like 4-AcO-DMT.
- Contamination: Because these products are made in unsanitary conditions, they risk contamination with bacteria, pesticides, or other harmful substances. In the US, a recall was issued for similar products, Diamond Shruumz, after they caused seizures and hospitalisations.
- Adulteration: Illegal edibles have also been found to be laced with other drugs, including fentanyl, posing a risk of overdose.
- Risk to children: The deceptive packaging, often mimicking popular chocolate bar brands, makes these products particularly dangerous to children who may mistake them for regular sweets.
Safe and legal alternatives
For those interested in non-psychoactive mushroom products, there are legal and safe alternatives available in the UK.
- CBD edibles: Legal edibles containing CBD are widely available from reputable UK retailers, provided they contain less than 1mg of THC per product and are registered under the Food Standards Agency’s (FSA) Novel Foods list.
- Functional mushroom supplements: Legal supplements containing mushrooms like Lion’s Mane, Reishi, and Cordyceps can be purchased from trusted retailers.
